Proper care and maintenance of your car will insure reliable and
long-lasting operation. Sadly, most people neglect the few simple
things required to keep their car in tip-top shape year 'round. This
is especially true during the fall and winter seasons, when the most
stress is placed upon your vehicle's structure and systems. Here are
a few of the basic things to do to help your car in its' battle against
the elements:
1. Check coolant amount and protection level using an antifreeze checker.
Antifreeze should be mixed with 50% water to function properly and
avoid corrosion of the radiator.
2. Check heater operation. If the air coming from the vents is not
warm enough, there could be a coolant leak, a blocked or broken heater
core, a bad thermostat, or insufficient coolant in the system.
3. Have a professional look at your exhaust system to check for holes
or leaks. Carbon monoxide could leak into the passenger compartment,
causing a potentially deadly hazard.
4. Check tire pressure, fluids, belts, and hoses.
5. Check your charging system, battery, battery cables, and alternator
to ensure proper operation and reliable cold-weather starting.
6. Check your spare tire - it will deflate if stored unused for a
long period of time. Also check to see that your jack and tools are
in their proper place.
7. Make sure you carry an ice scraper and/or snowbrush. A snow shovel
in the trunk can help dig you out of snow banks.
8. Keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent excessive moisture
buildup in your fuel system. This will also prevent the need for dry
gas.
9. Carry jumper cables, flares, and a blanket for emergencies.
